A new agreement between the organisations responsible for safety on rail-based public transport in the UK promises to deliver a host of benefits for operators, their employees, and the travelling public.

The recent signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation will also help tramways harmonise with relevant mainline rail practices.

Carl Williams, LRSSB Chief Executive, explained: “With a clear focus on sharing best practice, the agreement will help us to forge even closer relationships with colleagues in heavy rail.

“While there are some safety challenges unique to trams and similar metro systems, there are clearly many crossovers with mainline rail, and we’re looking forward to working with the RSSB on areas of shared concern.

“This collaboration will become increasingly important with a series of proposals for tram/train schemes currently under development that will require high levels of interoperability.”

Strengthening existing links between the two organisations, the MoC also highlights their shared priorities, including the health and safety of employees, protecting the environment, improving accessibility, and addressing human factors to reduce the risk of harm to customers.
