UK tramways are making huge strides towards an even safer future thanks to a collaborative approach that’s driving down accident risks and reducing sector costs, light rail leaders heard this week.
Led by the Light Rail Safety and Standards Board, systems across the UK have already embraced new ways of analysing the threats they face while committing to innovative solutions to wide-ranging challenges.
In a keynote presentation during the sector’s annual conference, LRSSB Chief Executive Carl Williams highlighted a host of projects that are already delivering measurable results.
“From providing expert analysis of previous incidents to researching new technologies, we’ve become world leaders when it comes to developing a comprehensive approach to all aspects of light rail safety,” he said.
“So far, our data-led modelling, combined with a host of other pioneering projects, has also delivered excellent value, with the £7 million invested in the LRSSB by the sector and the Department for Transport saving an estimated £20 million when compared to the cost of each network acting individually.
“By working in partnership with network operators, regulators and other key stakeholders, we’re clearly at the forefront of a revolution in risk reduction that has also included a full and ongoing review of safety guidance relating to tramway design and operations that will also help reduce costs associated with future light rail schemes.”
Delegates at the UK Light Rail Conference at the University of Leeds also heard how the LRSSB plans to build on its impressive successes to date with funding secured from the DfT and financial contributions made by the sector.
“Moving forward, collaboration and ongoing funding will be key to driving even more safety improvements across the sector as we work in partnership with academics and industry experts to investigate the potential of new technology while sharing best practice with colleagues across light rail,” Carl said.
“As the sector continues to grow and evolve, so will the LRSSB as it continues to deliver for the sector, passengers and the wider public,” he added.
