New LRSSB guidance is set to drive down the risks associated with construction and maintenance work on UK tramways.
While the principle focus of the document is on the safety of workers carrying out infrastructure works, it applies equally to tramway employees dealing with rolling stock issues, for example, when assisting a stranded tram.
Craig O’Brien, LRSSB Head of Engineering Safety and Innovation at the LRSSB, explained: “The safety of people working on or close to tracks has been a top priority of the Office of Rail and Road, and we’ve worked closely with them on the development of this new guidance.
“Drawn from existing best practice across the sector and, where appropriate, work already done by mainline railways, it details the key steps that need to be taken ahead of any work being carried out and practical steps that can be taken to ensure the safety of all concerned.”
Available to download from the LRSSB’s comprehensive online Reference Library, LRG36.0 Tramway Work and Worker Safety also sets out the basic requirements for skills management and accreditation for workers.
Electrical safety, including working near overhead line equipment, is also covered, as is the management of shift changes and the deployment of lookouts.
“The publication of this comprehensive guidance document marks the completion of another major piece of work by the LRSSB as it strives to further reduce the risk of incidents and accidents on our tramways,” Craig added.
The document can be downloaded from the library, which sits within the LRSSB’s online Safety Hub, here.
